James arched an eyebrow, his exasperation growing. "You need to fix your own terrible habits. Stop acting like the whole world owes you something. Is it really that hard to speak nicely? Especially to women. With a mouth as nasty as yours, who could possibly stand you?"
Steve fired back defensively. "I speak perfectly fine to everyone except that woman, Abriella! She just hates seeing me happy. If she wasn't constantly standing in the way, would things between Sylvia and me still be this tense?"
James sighed heavily. "I actually don't think Abriella is doing anything wrong. You shouldn't always blame others when things go south. You two loved each other once. No matter how it ended, you should leave some dignity for yourself and for her."
That remark made Steve laugh out loud in pure anger. He leaned back against his car seat and stared at the roof, a bitter taste flooding his mouth. Dignity? What dignity was left between him and Abriella? He saw right through it now. Abriella and Will were truly a match made in hell. Neither of them could stand seeing him live a good life.
While Steve silently cursed them, James's voice came through again, pivoting to business. "Tomorrow afternoon, you will accompany me to see Brian. You'll be coming as the chief legal counsel for Nelson Corporation."
The mention of official business instantly wiped away Steve's lazy demeanor. His expression turned sharp and cold as he readily agreed. "Got it. No problem."
Later that night in the suite of the postpartum care center.
After weathering countless storms, just being together again felt like a miracle they both cherished deeply. Small romantic gestures like rings and weddings had naturally fallen by the wayside. Come to think of it, it had been a very long time since they had worn rings belonging to one another.
The more James thought about it, the guiltier he felt. He owed Emmy far more than just a proposal and a wedding. He silently memorized the ring measurement he had just taken, planning to custom order a diamond ring for her the very next day.
He gently caressed her fingers. Sensing the movement in her sleep, Emmy murmured groggily and gave a soft frown. Back during the late stages of her pregnancy, whenever he could not control himself, those very hands had helped him out quite a bit. Half-asleep and feeling him touch her hand, she assumed he was feeling restless again. Without even opening her eyes, she instinctively pulled her hand back under the blankets, her voice soft and heavy with a sleepy, sweet whine. "I'm so tired today... I'll help you tomorrow... okay?"
