Emmy's heart immediately skipped a beat.
"Oh no, Dr. Hall is here to settle the score," she muttered to herself. To be completely honest, Emmy was actually quite terrified of Lorelei at this very moment. After all, during her three-day hotel getaway with James, her list of offenses was rather extensive. On the first day, Lorelei had called twice, but Emmy had been pinned to the mattress by James, lost in a passionate kiss, and completely ignored the phone. On the second day, Lorelei had texted her a stern warning to exercise restraint. Emmy had read it but never replied.
Now, looking at the stone-faced doctor standing like a judge on the steps, Emmy felt entirely guilty.
James pushed his door open, stepped out, and walked around the hood to open her door. Emmy dawdled as she got out, immediately shrinking behind his broad back as she followed him up the steps.
Watching the two of them, especially Emmy's guilty, evasive demeanor, Lorelei felt a surge of exasperated anger. She let out a weary sigh and shifted her gaze to James.
"James, if you are just going to ignore my medical advice, you might as well fire me right now."
James's handsome face remained impassive, his tone entirely self-righteous. "It was precisely because I listened to your warning that I only took her out to indulge for three days instead of seven."
Lorelei was left completely speechless. Was there even a difference? Did three straight days somehow not count as excessive indulgence?
Peeking out from behind James, Emmy offered Lorelei a sheepish smile. "Dr. Hall, please do not be mad. I am honestly perfectly fine. If you do not believe me, you can have the traditional medicine doctor check my pulse right now."
To support Emmy's prenatal care, the medical team Lorelei had brought along specifically included a highly skilled traditional medicine practitioner. The moment Emmy spoke, the elderly doctor stepped out from behind the door, clearly having been waiting there the whole time.
Watching her act like she had just survived a disaster, James found her incredibly endearing. She was a woman who seemed entirely fearless in the face of danger, yet she was somehow terrified of her doctor.
...
Over the following period, James shifted his work focus entirely to Boston to stay by her side. Just as he had done during her previous studies, whenever Emmy attended her classes at Harvard, he would sit right next to her and listen. It did not matter that he could not understand a single word of the complex theories. It did not matter that he occasionally dozed off and was caught by strict old professors who lectured him thoroughly. He would simply offer a polite apology and return to sit with her the very next time.
When Emmy was working in the lab, James would take his laptop to the lounge just outside. There, he would handle his multinational business affairs while waiting for her to finish.
Ever since James started accompanying her full-time, the atmosphere in the lab had undergone a drastic shift. Every day John came to work, the oppressive weight of James's sharp gaze gave him an immense amount of pressure. Paradoxically, that very pressure caused their research progress to skyrocket. A project that was supposed to take much longer was completely wrapped up, down to the final experiments, in just half a month.
