The massive recoil sent a numb shock through Emmy's shoulders, causing half her body to sway violently. But because of the close distance, all three bullets hit the mercenary without fail. The man did not even let out a scream before he face planted onto the ground, never moving again.
Coby, the young refugee hiding nearby, witnessed this entire scene with his own eyes, so shocked that his eyeballs nearly popped out of his head. He had originally thought this beautiful, delicate Western woman needed their protection, but he never expected her to be so swift and decisive when killing enemies! Coby gulped, the raw courage in his bones ignited. He gritted his teeth, boldly crawled over, and forcefully dragged the rifle out from underneath the mercenary's corpse. Mimicking Emmy, he laid flat in another crevice between the rocks, protecting the trembling refugees behind him.
The firefight at the bottom of the hill had completely reached a climax. James was like a blood soaked god of war, constantly rolling, dodging, and advancing using the terrain under the covering fire of Brett and the others. With one final tactical roll, the tall and imposing figure flashed directly behind the rocks.
The surrounding refugees were terrified by this sudden giant intruder, exclaiming and screaming as they covered their heads. But James thrust out his long arms and pulled the woman he thought he would never see again into his embrace. He held her so tightly, his strength so immense it felt as if he wanted to crush Emmy into his very bones and blood. Emmy's eyes welled with tears, and she tightly hugged his broad back in return.
Coby was scared out of his wits, thinking an enemy had broken through. Just as he turned the muzzle around, before his finger even touched the trigger, he met a pair of deep, dark eyes that were freezing cold, bloodthirsty, and as terrifying as a demon. Pinned in place by the murderous intent in that gaze, Coby's entire body went stiff. When he got a clear look at the chiseled face under the helmet, he immediately cried out in pleasant surprise.
"Mr. Nelson!?" Coby stared at the embracing couple, completely bewildered.
Just then, the enemies on the opposite side seemed to grow frantic, concentrating their fire on this rock. A bullet grazed the edge of the rock and, at a tricky angle, bit into James's exposed left arm. A long trail of warm blood instantly painted a blinding arc in the air.
"James!" Emmy's heart stopped in terror. She cried out, desperately trying to sit up.
But James did not even furrow his brow. The arm that was bleeding still held the gun as steady as a boulder, and even the frequency of his shooting did not change. "Do not come out!" he ordered sharply, his profile cold and devoid of any emotion as he maintained his leaning shooting posture.
