The group blocking the mountain pass ahead was none other than Tyler, the captain of the bodyguards who had been ordered to wait there for backup. Several bulletproof SUVs were parked across the side of the road, and a full team of heavily armed bodyguards stood outside the vehicles. The moment the SUV screeched to a halt, James pushed open the door and jumped out. He strode over to Tyler.
"Did you find her?" he demanded, his voice terribly hoarse and laced with an urgency that made people afraid to look at him.
Tyler lowered his head, not daring to meet James's eyes. "Master Sergeant... we have searched back and forth along this retreat route twice now. We did not find Emmy."
Those words felt like a heavy hammer slamming ruthlessly against James's already battered heart. His tall frame swayed slightly. That heart, which had just been struggling to beat, now plummeted straight down into an even deeper abyss of ice. How could she not be here? Since he went in pursuit last night, he had ordered Tyler to search for her along this retreat route. If Emmy had escaped before the laboratory collapsed, she absolutely would not have run around blindly. She would have definitely followed the safe route he had explained on the cruise ship and kept walking outward. But now, Tyler and his men had searched back and forth twice and still found no one. What did that mean? Did it mean she never managed to escape from that collapsing fortress?
"Impossible!" James gritted his teeth, forcibly suppressing that terrifying thought from his mind. His handsome, bloodstained face grew darker, a terrifying hostility surging in his eyes. "Keep searching!" He turned and barked orders at everyone. "Get in the cars right now! Keep searching for her along this route!"
The team members did not hesitate for a second, quickly pulling open the doors and hopping in. This time, James yanked open the driver's side door and pulled the original driver out. He sat in the driver's seat to lead the way.
In the passenger seat, Brett quickly buckled his seatbelt. He turned to look at his captain, hesitating several times before finally swallowing the words he wanted to say. James did not even need to look to know what Brett was thinking. They were currently holding Dean in the war-torn zone of the Delta Coast. Every minute they delayed meant another minute of danger. The intelligence they had just intercepted was very clear. Two heavily armed factions were rushing over at full speed, and all of them were coming for Dean. The longer they stalled here, the more they were essentially sticking their necks out and giving those people a chance to rescue him. But even though James knew full well that his current decision was unwise, as long as he had not found Emmy, he could not hand Dean over to Barrett for a solo escort. He knew exactly what the Fijian forces were capable of, and if they truly encountered top-tier mercenaries from Country M, they would not be able to protect Dean at all. If Dean was rescued or silenced, where would he find the last glimmer of hope for his wife's survival?
"Take cover! Return fire!" James yanked the steering wheel hard, and the SUV drifted dangerously along the narrow mountain road, scraping right against the edge of the cliff.
Deafening explosions erupted behind the convoy. Dirt, rubble, and scorched branches were blasted into the air by the shockwaves. The lead vehicles narrowly escaped disaster thanks to James's insane driving skills, but Barrett's troops trailing behind were not so lucky. The falling bombs exploded right in the middle of their convoy. Amidst the soaring flames, several troop transports were directly flipped over by the massive shockwaves and smashed into the hillside.
"Damn it!" Will cursed angrily inside the vehicle, quickly setting up his heavy sniper rifle. Hitting high speed fighter jets from the cabin of a violently shaking vehicle was almost impossible, but he was Dragonscale's top sniper. Will held his breath, his eyes as sharp as a falcon's as he locked onto the target in his scope. Two crisp gunshots pierced through the roar of the explosions. The specially made armor piercing bullets accurately shattered the jet's bulletproof glass. In mid air, one of the jets jerked violently, and a mist of blood erupted where the pilot's head used to be. The out of control helicopter trailed thick black smoke as it plummeted straight toward a distant mountain peak.
