At the mere mention of the word food, the dull eyes of the refugees instantly lit up with a terrifying intensity. Everyone subconsciously swallowed hard, clearly wavering. They had been hiding in this dark, damp cave for so long they were already dizzy and weak from starvation. If they couldn't get a single bite of real food soon, they would just slowly starve to death in the dark.
A skinny man swallowed hard and turned to look at Coby. "Maybe... maybe we should trust her this once. Just look at the kids. If we wait any longer, they'll starve for sure."
A woman clutching an infant tearfully agreed. "He's right. Even if we don't starve, what if another bomb hits nearby? This broken cave won't hold. If it collapses, we'll be buried alive anyway."
People drowning in absolute despair will ruthlessly cling to even the thinnest straw. After a brief discussion, the dozens of refugees gritted their teeth and finally made their choice. They decided to bet their lives on Emmy's plan.
But before they had even gone a few steps, Emmy's face turned deathly pale. She suddenly stopped walking, clutching her kraft paper bag tightly with one hand while the other instinctively pressed against her stomach. A sharp, dragging pain shot through her lower abdomen, causing cold sweat to pour down her face.
Coby's mother noticed something was wrong immediately. She rushed to her side and asked, "Miss, are you pregnant?"
Emmy bit her pale lower lip and nodded. "Yes. I think the baby is under too much stress. My stomach hurts so badly, I don't dare take another step."
Several black teenagers instantly scrambled forward, practically shoving each other out of the way.
"I'll carry you."
"I'm stronger, let me carry you."
But he checked every single corner and scrutinized every single face. Nothing. They were all technicians and laboratory experts in white coats. There was absolutely no sign of Emmy.
A massive, paralyzing panic gripped James's throat like an icy hand. He lunged forward, grabbing the lead technician by the collar and hoisting the man completely off the deck.
"Where is Emmy?" he demanded, the veins on his forehead throbbing violently. His voice was hoarse, carrying a chilling, murderous rage. "Why didn't you bring her out with you? Where is she?"
The technician trembled violently under his terrifying aura, crying and shaking his head in absolute panic. "I don't know... I really don't know. I don't know any Emmy... As soon as we got the self-destruct order, we just ran for the secret tunnel. Please don't kill me... I swear I don't know anything."
James hurled him onto the deck and hauled up the next person. "Did you see a pregnant woman from The States? Where is she? Talk."
