It just so happened that Emmy could understand the fairly simple local dialect. Fighting back the nausea in her stomach, she shouted back in the same tongue, "What happened here? What's going on?"
The boy looked at her like she was an idiot. Having no desire to bother with a woman who clearly didn't value her own life, he turned and bolted. But after only a few steps, as if suddenly realizing something, he abruptly spun around and ran back. His eyes darted over her filthy but clearly high-quality clothing and her pale skin, a sharp glint flashing in his gaze.
"Are you white? Which major corporate family do you belong to?"
Emmy immediately shook her head. "I'm not from here. I'm from The States."
At the mention of The States, the boy's guarded face instantly erupted in sheer, disbelief-fueled ecstasy. For refugees like them, struggling to survive in this lawless no-man's-land, those words were a literal golden ticket to survival. Warlords and mercenaries alike had an unspoken rule that no one dared touch an American citizen for fear of triggering unfathomable international retaliation.
"You're from The States?" The boy was practically vibrating with excitement. He rushed forward and grabbed Emmy by the wrist. "Run with me. Hurry."
Emmy stumbled forward from his pull. The reef beneath her feet was already slippery, and with a sharp cry, she fell forward, landing directly onto the mangled corpse of a mercenary. Thick, dark red blood instantly stained her jacket. The overwhelming stench of rotting flesh and gunpowder shot straight to her brain.
As soon as Emmy pushed herself up, she couldn't hold it back anymore. Propping her hands on her knees, she dry heaved so violently that tears streamed down her face.
The boy hopped from foot to foot in panic. Hearing the increasingly loud thrum of helicopter rotors in the distance, he abruptly bent down, offering her his scrawny back.
"There's no time. Come on, I'll carry you."
Between the agonizing ordeal of the previous night and the violent, bumpy run just now, the baby inside her was protesting restlessly. Her lower abdomen tightened in painful waves. She could only weakly step back, leaning against the cold, damp stone wall as she slowly crouched down, her hands resting soothingly on her pregnant belly.
The surrounding crowd babbled at her all at once. By the time they finished their excited explanations, Emmy finally managed to piece together the full picture.
These people were the lowest tier of refugees on the triangular coast. Enslaved and exploited by various warlords, they had been hiding in this bomb shelter like rats for a very long time. With firefights breaking out everywhere outside, they were unarmed and entirely trapped.
Their absolute only chance at survival was to trek hundreds of miles on foot to the Cardon Safety Zone, an area untouched by the war. However, the path to Cardon required crossing countless active, blood-soaked war zones. If this group simply walked out, they would be nothing more than walking targets.
But they all knew that the armed factions in this land wouldn't easily harm an American. So right now, to them, Emmy was a guiding light sent straight from heaven. As long as they took her with them and placed her at the very front of the line, they would absolutely reach Cardon safely. Otherwise, if they stayed in this dark, lightless cave, they would all eventually starve to death.
