Emmy sighed silently to herself. She simply couldn't explain too much. She knew perfectly well that her presence here was purely to act as bait. She didn't even know the odds of her making it out alive. If she told Andrew the truth, he would tie her up and throw her into a car back to The States. Left with no other option, she decided to feign compliance.
"Alright, I'll listen to you. Let me go check on Laney first."
Seeing her yield, Andrew finally breathed a sigh of relief. Carrying the water basin, he led Emmy toward a guest room at the far end of the corridor.
The door creaked open. There were no lights inside, only the pale moonlight filtering through the window. Emmy immediately spotted a figure huddled in the corner of the bed. Laney was wrapped tight in a blanket, curled up like a frightened shrimp. At the sound of the door opening, she trembled. But when she realized it was Emmy standing in the doorway, she froze before violently throwing off the blanket and sitting bolt upright. Her bloodshot eyes instantly sparked with unbelievable light, like a drowning victim suddenly grasping their only lifeline.
"Emmy! Is it really you? Why are you here?" Laney scrambled off the bed without even putting on her shoes.
Emmy quickly walked over and caught the girl in her arms. She patted Laney's back gently, her voice soft. "Laney, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"
Laney buried her face in Emmy's shoulder, shaking her head desperately. She clung to Emmy, her composure completely crumbling as she broke down in tears. "I'm not hurt. But I thought I was dead! Emmy, you have no idea. That place was terrifying!"
Laney remained glued to Emmy like a koala, sniffling softly against her. Standing nearby, Andrew's gaze fell on their closely pressed bodies, and his brow furrowed almost imperceptibly. He suddenly stepped forward, grabbed Laney's arm, and pulled her away from Emmy's embrace.
"Dad, what are you doing!" Laney protested, trying to dive back into Emmy's arms.
Andrew simply grabbed the blanket from the bed and, in a few swift motions, wrapped Laney up tight like a burrito before pressing her back against the headboard. Once he was certain his daughter couldn't lunge again, he turned to answer Emmy's question.
