Inside the room, Steve sat propped against the pillows of his hospital bed. An adjustable tray table straddled his lap, holding an open laptop displaying work interfaces. He appeared to be handling business, but his mind was miles away from the screen. Completely distracted, he had been straining to listen to the activity in the room next door. At the sound of the knock, Steve snapped to attention. A desperate glimmer of hope illuminated his hollow eyes, and his voice laced with urgency as he called out, "Come in!"
The door swung open, and Emmy walked in. Steve's gaze immediately flew past her shoulder, scanning the space behind her. However, the figure he so desperately wished to see was nowhere in sight. In that instant, the light in his eyes slowly died. Dejected, he greeted her. "Emmy, you came."
Emmy knew perfectly well whom he was looking for. She turned her head and instructed Nina to set the items down and step out. Only after Nina left and closed the door behind her did Emmy take a seat. "Sylvia has already been discharged."
Steve's fingers curled inward sharply. He let out a low "Oh," masking his crippling disappointment. Reaching out, he snapped his laptop shut and asked, "Why did James not come with you?"
"He has business to attend to."
Steve nodded, falling silent as a brief quiet settled over the room. Emmy quietly observed the man leaning against the headboard. A moment later, her fingers curled slightly against her knees, and she suddenly voiced her question. "James mentioned to me... that you had a very strange dream, like visiting a parallel world?"
Ever since James told her about Steve's bizarre vision, an inexplicable sense of dread and intense apprehension had taken root in her heart. She needed to know if Steve, like her, had been reborn. If he was, would he know about the life she lived in her previous incarnation? What panicked her even more was the thought that James sharing this information might have been his indirect way of testing her, probing for holes in her story. Today, she had to verify the truth for herself.
Steve's eyes went wide as saucers, and he could not hold back a curse. "Holy shit!" Slapping the table in sudden realization, he exclaimed, "No wonder! No wonder you have such an incredible head for business! When you put it like that, everything finally makes sense!" His features twisted with pure jealousy. "How is it you got to see endless ways to strike it rich, while I got stuck watching my most painful years?"
Having finally found a kindred spirit, he began venting his frustrations. "The people I found online with similar experiences all glimpsed the inner workings of fate while on the verge of death. They saw major events that would happen years down the line. But who in their right mind would ever believe something like that?"
Keeping her expression entirely neutral, Emmy followed his lead. "What kind of major events did they see?"
