Faye shook her head violently. "Impossible. Absolutely impossible."
"My daughter just had a heart transplant a few days ago. Why would she suddenly kill herself for no reason?"
"You must have said or done something to drive her to it!"
Murray pointed an accusatory finger at his bandaged, bloodstained arm. "Take a look at your daughter's handiwork. She was completely out of her mind. Clinically insane."
Andres pushed Murray aside, fixing Faye with a deadly, somber stare.
"You had better pray to whatever god you believe in that my wife makes it out of there safely. If anything happens to her, I will personally bury the entire Grover family alongside her."
"Maeve is the one who killed Nancy!" Faye shrieked hysterically. "She hated Nancy for taking Charlie's heart! She even tried to cut it out of her in front of everyone!"
Faye stubbornly refused to believe anything else; her daughter's death had to be the fault of Andres and Maeve.
Hans quickly stepped in to block Faye as she tried to launch herself at Andres.
"If Maeve wanted Nancy dead, why would she risk her own pregnancy to stand at an operating table and save her life?"
"Nancy was out of her mind, and apparently, you're just as delusional."
Like mother, like daughter—a matched set of lunatics.
"How am I supposed to know what sick schemes she was cooking up?!" Faye roared. "That bitch is pure evil! I have every right to suspect she did something to Nancy while she was sedated on that table!"
"Yes, that's it! I remember now, Maeve is some kind of genius with weird drugs! That's exactly what happened. She drugged my daughter into a psychotic break to make it look like a suicide!"
"I gave her ten million dollars, and she still murdered my baby! She deserves to die a horrible death, and she's going straight to hell!"
Andres was already on the verge of a breakdown over Maeve's precarious condition. Listening to Faye's deranged screeching shattered whatever restraint he had left.
Furious, he struck Faye with a brutal backhand across the face.
"Get out!"
The force of the slap whipped Faye's head to the side, a trickle of blood leaking from the corner of her mouth.
She clutched her stinging cheek, glaring at Andres with pure venom.
"If your daughter was murdered, the relevant authorities will handle it. We're here for an entirely different case."
"Thatcher Grover is your husband, correct? Your household staff just called in a report. They found his body in the basement. Preliminary findings indicate he was strangled to death with a leather belt."
"We need you to come down to the station for questioning immediately."
A flicker of raw panic crossed Faye's eyes.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Two officers instantly flanked her, grabbing her tightly by the arms.
"That's fine. We can discuss it in detail once we're in the interrogation room."
Just like that, Faye was hauled away by the police.
Andres and Hans exchanged a stunned look, the same question silently passing between them: Thatcher is dead? And Faye murdered him?
