Subconsciously, Simon Grover didn't want to accept her words.
But everything Maeve Vance said made perfect sense.
The Grover family was now just one step away from total collapse, a far cry from their former glory.
Titus Burton hadn't reached his current political heights without ruthless tactics and a brilliant mind.
If he truly wanted what was best for his daughter, Simon, the second son of a declining family, was hardly a prize catch.
"Maeve, do you know something?" he asked.
Maeve leaned back. "Do you know how Titus Burton secured his current position?"
Simon shrugged. "I don't pay attention to that circle."
His comfort zone was academic research; everything else was irrelevant noise.
Maeve didn't hold back. "He steals luck."
Simon looked at her, entirely lost.
"Are you saying he didn't reach the top through actual capability, but by relying on the Forbidden Arts?"
This sort of thing wasn't exactly a secret among the ultra-elite. Many powerful figures resorted to dark, unorthodox methods to amass wealth and power.
Had anyone else said it, Simon would have laughed it off.
But coming from Maeve, it was almost certainly the truth.
Maeve's adoptive father, Griffin, was a legendary grandmaster in those esoteric circles. With that kind of backing, her words were never empty threats.
"Simon, this might sting, but I have to warn you. Titus Burton proposing this marriage alliance right now is nothing but a trap to use his disabled daughter to siphon your luck."
"He doesn't give a damn if the Grover family lives or dies. He just wants to drain your fortune so he can secure his next promotion."
"Out of the four Grover children, your destiny is the strongest."
"Once he bleeds you dry of your good fortune, his goal is achieved."
Simon sprang from his chair, his expression twisting in horror.
"Are you serious?"
Maeve casually spun her chair side to side.
"If... I'm just saying if... I actually married Lily Burton, what would happen to me?"
Maeve looked him dead in the eye. "At best, you'd lose absolutely everything. At worst, you'd die freezing on the streets. Without your luck protecting you, surviving in this world would be nearly impossible."
She wasn't trying to scare him. She had genuinely seen this fatal disaster written in his destiny.
A sudden, inexplicable hatred surged in Simon's chest.
He had no grudges against the Burton family, yet they were plotting to destroy him.
"Maeve, even if you hadn't come to me today, I wouldn't have agreed to marry into the Burton family."
He held up the USB drive she had given him and offered a sincere nod. "Thank you."
"Did he believe you?"
When Maeve left the building, Andres White was waiting to pick her up personally. He naturally knew exactly why she had made this trip.
The Burton family had been gaining serious momentum over the last few years. If the Grovers allied with them now, they might have actually found a way to turn their sinking ship around.
Maeve just shrugged indifferently.
