But when it came to romance, she was incredibly clear-headed. Even if she had loved this man with all her heart, she absolutely refused to be tangled up with someone who was already married.
Declan was highly emotional.
"Naomi, do you have any idea that my marriage was forced upon me?"
Naomi sneered. "And? What exactly is your point?"
Declan stared at her with burning intensity.
"While you were gone, I've been searching everywhere for you."
Naomi found the whole situation utterly laughable. "You're married, and you came looking for me. What, do you expect me to be your homewrecker?"
The agonizing reality of their situation tore at Declan's heart.
"I'm sorry. I know I failed you this time."
To Naomi, 'I'm sorry' were the three most worthless words in a relationship.
"Declan, sometimes when you miss an opportunity, you miss it for a lifetime."
Declan refused to accept that their story was ending like this.
He grabbed her wrist again, his expression turning deadly serious.
"Give me three years..."
Naomi laughed. "And then what? You get a divorce? I slide into the empty slot? And we just happily pick up where we left off?"
She violently shook off his hand.
"Don't be naive, Declan. Even if I was willing to wait for you, can you guarantee that our feelings won't change after all that?"
"Besides, my love isn't nearly as cheap as you think. I'm not going to just stand around waiting like an idiot after being tossed aside."
"Just accept the reality that we weren't meant to be. There's plenty to see on the road of life; there's no need to stay stuck in one place throwing a pity party."
Declan pulled Naomi into a tight embrace as tears silently fell from his eyes.
He knew that the moment he let go, he would lose this girl forever. But he had no choice but to let go.
"I'm sorry. I failed you in this life. If there's a next life..."
The words choked in his throat, and he couldn't speak another syllable.
Terrified, she ran frantically, screaming for help, but the bystanders just stared at her like she was a walking joke.
No one stepped in to save her, and her memories of the night were fragmented and chaotic.
Her only clear recollection was lying on a massive bed with pure white silk sheets, writhing in the throes of passion with a man whose face she completely forgot.
As he took her, the man's deep, magnetic voice rasped in her ear.
"Who are you?"
Naomi jolted awake, gasping for air as she realized it was just another nightmare.
A dull ache throbbed in her lower abdomen, and it felt as though the dream had drained every ounce of strength from her body.
The other passengers on the bus were staring at her with weird looks, as if she were a freak.
The bus pulled to a stop.
Ignoring her physical discomfort, Naomi practically scrambled off the vehicle.
Perhaps the suffocating stress of the past few days had finally caught up to her. She barely took a few steps before her vision went completely black, and she collapsed.
