No sooner had Ivy and Stella walked through the front door than Summer pulled up to the estate right behind them.
Panicking, Ivy quickly hurried Stella upstairs, whispering frantically:
"Let's play upstairs for now. We won't go down or make a sound until the person downstairs leaves, okay?"
Stella looked confused. "Why? Who's at the door? Is it Daddy?"
"No, it's that lady we just ran into at the school gates."
Stella still didn't understand. "Why is she at our house? Does she want to give Mommy more money?"
"Not exactly."
Ivy pulled her into the bedroom, explaining patiently:
"She's your daddy's niece. She's probably here to see him for something important. She doesn't seem to realize you're his daughter either. Let's just stay up here and avoid her."
She set the little girl down on the plush sofa, her tone softening into a gentle coaxing.
Stella reluctantly agreed.
"Fine!"
"But I don't want Daddy to have a niece like her. I hate her."
"I don't like her either, which is why we're going to stay far away from her."
Ivy pulled a sketchbook and some colored pencils out of Stella's backpack. "Come on, I'll teach you how to draw."
Stella absolutely loved it when this new mommy taught her things.
She was always so gentle and meticulous.
Even when Stella messed up, Ivy never yelled or scolded her.
No matter how many times she failed to grasp something, Ivy remained endlessly patient.
It made Stella eager to learn.
Meanwhile, downstairs.
Summer was furiously ringing the doorbell.
When Mrs. Gable went to answer and saw it was Mr. Foster's niece, she kept the iron gate securely locked, her tone decidedly unwelcoming.
"Ms. Vance, are you here to see Mr. Foster? He isn't back from work yet. You'll have to come back later."
Summer's face immediately darkened.
Summer quickly slipped inside right behind it.
This time, Mrs. Gable didn't try to stop her.
The moment Alaric stepped out of his car, Summer rushed up to him, putting on her most pitiful, teary-eyed expression.
"Uncle Alaric, I went and apologized to that little girl. I even paid her off. Can I please go back to work at the hospital now?"
Alaric glanced at the expensive watch on his wrist.
It was past the time Ivy usually brought the child home.
He didn't invite Summer inside. Instead, he stood tall and imposing in his tailored suit, looking down at her with a chillingly indifferent gaze.
"Show me the apology video."
Summer froze. "What apology video? I... I didn't film one. But I did transfer money to Ivy!"
Desperate, she hastily pulled up the transaction record on her phone to show him.
"Look! I paid them fifty thousand dollars!"
"And Uncle Alaric, Ivy really did marry an old man just to be a stepmother to a little brat! I literally heard the girl call her Mommy."
