Buying My Forever Wife novel Chapter 53

That night, after Ivy had coaxed Stella to sleep.

Passing by, she saw the lights in Alaric's study were still on.

She went to the kitchen to prepare a bowl of Calming Herbal Tea and brought it to the study, knocking on the door.

Hearing a response from inside, Ivy pushed the door open, walked softly over to the man, and offered the bowl.

"Mr. Foster, I saw you working so late and figured you must be tired. I made you some Calming Herbal Tea. It will help you sleep soundly."

Alaric glanced at the bowl placed beside him.

He didn't look at the girl across from him, his voice low. "Speak if you have something to say."

Ivy took a deep breath, pursed her lips, and began.

"I know I was wrong today. I shouldn't have caused you trouble, and I realize the severity of my actions. As long as you let me stay and continue to accompany Stella, I promise I won't make the same mistake again."

She really needed the money.

Staying here, doing virtually nothing but spending time with Stella, allowed her to earn a $20,000 monthly allowance.

Where else could she find such an amazing job?

At this thought, the man across from her bluntly called her out.

"If I didn't pay you, would you still choose to stay?"

Ivy was startled. Though she really wanted to admit that she was in it for the money.

How could a powerful boss like him not see right through her intentions?

Even if it was a lie, she had to say something that pleased him, to make him feel comfortable enough to keep giving her the benefits.

Ivy spoke against her conscience.

"As long as Mr. Foster provides me a place to live and a meal to eat every day, even without a single cent, I would still choose to stay."

Alaric remained silent.

He just stared at her scrutinizingly.

Trying to see how much truth was in her words.

Ivy looked back at him.

Even if she felt incredibly guilty, she had to feign confidence.

So she met his gaze without blinking.

Alaric suddenly felt a suffocating tightness in his chest.

He found this emotion incredibly strange. Unwilling to dwell on it, he quickly grabbed his robe and went to shower.

Early the next morning, after going with the driver to drop Stella off at St. Jude's Preschool, Ivy used her time recovering at home to frantically study for her driver's license exam.

At noon, Ivy was sitting in the second-floor tea room studying.

An unknown number called her phone.

It was from her hometown.

Realizing she had blocked her parents.

Could it be her parents calling from someone else's phone?

Ivy didn't want to answer and pretended not to hear it.

After ringing for a while, the person started sending messages.

[Ivy, it's Toby. Dad got into a car accident and is lying in the hospital needing a lot of money. Can you transfer some cash to us?]

Ivy looked at the message; it was from her brother.
