It wasn't that she didn't want to engage with him. She desperately wanted to chat about her day, debate trivialities, and just share life with him.
But she knew if she allowed herself to revel in that domestic intimacy, she would grow fatally dependent on him. She would fall dangerously in love.
Terrified of the devastating agony when he inevitably handed her divorce papers, she chose to erect an impenetrable emotional barrier to starve out her growing feelings.
It was the only way she would survive the impending heartbreak.
After dinner, Ivy ushered the child through her bedtime routine. She tucked her under the covers of the nursery bed, gently reading a story to soothe her to sleep.
A little later, Ivy's phone buzzed with a text from Alaric.
He ordered her to report to the master bedroom as soon as the kid was asleep.
Ivy knew exactly what the command implied.
She wasn't going to turn him down on that front.
Ensuring Stella was deeply asleep, she quietly slipped out and headed down the hall.
Alaric was propped up against the headboard. The dark silk of his pajamas highlighted his natural, predatory elegance.
Bathed in the warm amber glow of the bedside lamp, his chiseled jawline looked devastatingly sharp.
Seeing her walk in, a subtle shift rippled across his brow.
Ivy didn't utter a single syllable, nor did she make a move toward him. She simply crawled under the duvet and laid rigidly on the far edge of the vast mattress.
She knew he had summoned her to fulfill her physical duties.
She would submit, but she absolutely refused to initiate.
She was determined to emotionally detach and simply execute her contractual obligations.
She would never dare to dream of anything more.
Observing her wooden, mechanical compliance, Alaric felt a sharp spike of annoyance.
He reached out, aggressively yanking the covers back, his voice dropping to a dark rumble.
"Sit up. We need to talk."
Ivy was facing entirely away from him.
Hearing his sudden demand for conversation left her deeply suspicious.
Hadn't he just called her here for sex? Why did he suddenly want to chat?
What could they possibly have to discuss?
Reluctantly curious, she sat up. Refusing to look in his direction, she slumped against the headboard, looking thoroughly miserable.
Alaric drilled his gaze into her. "What's bothering you? Tell me what's on your mind."
Ivy blinked, genuinely bewildered.
What did he mean by that?
She had absolutely nothing to say to him.
