"No, Nugget was in the bedroom with the nanny the whole time."
Arthur sat down, anxiously rubbing his hands together. It took him a long time to finally speak. "He said... you two were together last night, and that he wants to take responsibility for you."
The blood rushed straight to Willa's head, infuriating her.
Take responsibility? What did he have to offer her?
His own life was a complete disaster.
All she needed was for him to stay away from her, and stay away from Nugget.
She had finally carved out a stable life, and she wasn't going to let him effortlessly ruin it again.
"What else did he say?" Willa's voice turned frigid.
"He said he wants to start over with you."
Arthur hesitated, then asked carefully, "Willa, tell me the truth. Is Nugget... his son?"
"Yes." Willa admitted it without hesitation. "But if you want to keep Nugget with us, you absolutely cannot let him know the truth about the baby. Do you understand?"
Arthur nodded profusely. "I'll listen to you. Whatever you say, I'll do it."
"Did he say anything besides that?"
"No. After he said his piece, he dropped off those things by the door and left. I didn't dare touch them, I was just waiting for you to come home and decide."
"Okay. Dad, do me a favor. Let's move all of that right back to his front door, exactly as he left it."
Arthur didn't ask questions; he just stood up and helped her carry the boxes.
After handing Nugget over to the nanny, Willa went to help too.
"I wasn't talking nonsense. I told the truth. I am going to take responsibility for you." Randal's expression was stubbornly self-righteous.
The fire in Willa's chest flared up again.
"What right do you have to take responsibility for me? I have a husband. Nugget has a father. I don't need your unnecessary charity."
"Husband?" Randal's voice dropped to a freezing temperature, dripping with mockery. "You mean Corbin Sommers? Did you know he's been away on a business trip in Switzerland for a week now?"
He stepped closer, his tone sharp. "I also heard recently that a certain someone is trying every trick in the book to marry into the Sommers family. Who knows if this trip has an ulterior motive? After all, your foreign marriage certificate isn't legally binding here."
Willa choked on her words. She genuinely hadn't known about Corbin's trip, and for a moment, she couldn't find a suitable rebuttal.
But she couldn't show weakness or let herself panic. With Randal's sharp intuition, he would quickly deduce that her relationship with Corbin was a total sham.
If Corbin really was seeing someone else, her lie would unravel instantly.
