Looking at the contents on the screen, Bai Su finally understood why Lu Tingyan had been so magnanimous in the past.
Why the amnesiac Lu Tingyan was so insecure, why he adamantly refused to believe she could like him, or that anyone could ever like him.
They shared the same kind of childhood.
She couldn’t even begin to imagine how Lu Tingyan’s mother could have borne to say such harsh, cutting words to him when he was just a child.
The suppression in his childhood came from all directions.
When he took first place, his mother would say he wasn’t trying hard enough, that he was only a little better than second place, and that he was too proud and conceited.
No matter how well he did, all he ever received was criticism.
"Even though you took first place, you’re still a good-for-nothing compared to experienced soldiers. You don’t deserve to be in the Lu Family’s army."
"Why do you only ever know how to study? You’re so pompous and bureaucratic, no one finds you the least bit likable."
"Is this the model airplane you made? The military may have requisitioned it, but you have too much killing intent. Only your mother could ever like you; it’s no wonder you don’t have any friends."
"You think it’s a big deal to receive gifts from females? No, they’re just looking down on you with pity. No one will ever genuinely like you."
"Your younger brother let you have that military graduation insignia. How can you have no self-awareness at all? How did I give birth to someone with such a disgusting personality? Who besides your own family could possibly tolerate you?"
"You’re so ugly. Why don’t you take some money and get plastic surgery? Otherwise, how will any female ever be willing to marry you? You can’t just mooch off your mother for the rest of your life, can you?"
"You are truly the disgrace of our Lu Family. The relatives are coming for New Year’s greetings soon. You are not to leave your room, do you hear me? Don’t embarrass us."
"Your cousins are here. What’s the big deal if they play with your trophies? So what if one breaks? You have so many others. Why can’t you be more generous? If you act like this when you become someone’s Beast Husband, you’ll be despised to death. So petty!"
"How did I give birth to such a petty thing? You’re a male, be more magnanimous!"
The sheer weight of the words was suffocating.
Bai Su recalled how Lu Tingyan had always been so magnanimous in the past, helping her select other Beast Husbands and cleaning up all sorts of messes for her, and she couldn’t help but feel a wave of sadness.
And after he lost his memory, no matter how many times she told him she was his wife and that they had several children, he still refused to believe it.
He said that something so wonderful could never happen to him.
And so he didn’t believe a single word she said.
Bai Su couldn’t help but lower her head in sorrow. ’Indeed, I still know far too little about Lu Tingyan.’
No wonder it was so easy for Lu Tingyan to be usurped after he was injured on the battlefield and lost his spiritual power.
No wonder so many of his relatives and uncles wanted to claim a share of the spoils and seize his leadership the moment he was gone.
His experiences with the Lu Family were hardly any better than what she had gone through with her own parents in her past life.
Bai Su closed the laptop for him and continued searching the room.
The sound of cannon fire boomed from outside.
Bai Su jumped in fright and quickly pulled open the curtains to look outside.
The army commander stood gloomily outside the estate, watching the people inside.
Yelias and Wen Lan had retreated back into the estate; it seemed their negotiations had failed.
Bai Su frowned slightly. ’Perhaps Lu Jian Country was certain the ring wasn’t in the mansion from the start, which is why he’s been so bold as to launch a direct assault.’
She tried hard to search through the memories from the Clone.
It seemed Lu Tingyan had been wearing a ring, but she hadn’t paid any special attention to his accessories at the time, so she couldn’t be certain.
But right now, there was probably no time to find the ring.
She ran down from upstairs. "Kong Ji!"
Kong Ji hurried in. "Your Grace."
Bai Su asked, "Have you been able to contact Yodel?"
Yodel was Lu Tingyan’s adjutant and should have been able to mobilize some forces.
Kong Ji shook his head. "We haven’t been able to reach him since Lu Jian Country returned to the Imperial City."
’So it was premeditated. He’d already made up his mind to seize power long ago.’
With Lu Jian Country’s order, all the soldiers aimed their fire at a single point on the Barrier—the fastest way to break through it.
Bombs followed suit.
The immense explosive energy made the web of Wen Lan’s hand go numb.
He glanced at Wen Dabao beside him. "How are you doing? Can you hold on?"
Wen Dabao’s eyes were filled with excitement. "This is awesome! Can I go out and fight them directly?"
Wen Lan said, "Not yet."
A look of regret flashed across Wen Dabao’s face.
Bai Xiaolang and Bai Xiaoshe charged out of a breach at the side and rushed into the crowd.
Though they were heavily outnumbered, the two little ones were seasoned veterans and handled the situation with ease.
Bai Xiaolang’s Tearing Space and Bai Xiaoshe’s Poison Gas Bomb Skills quickly tore open a breach.
But at the same time, the army’s firepower also concentrated on the two, and a dense rain of bullets and shells fell upon them.
Yelias and Bai Xiao Zhu’s silk threads instantly wrapped around the two, yanking them away.
Their feet had just left the ground when the explosive energy from a bomb followed close behind, the searing heat chasing after them.
Luckily, they got out just in time.
Seeing that they had both gone out, Wen Dabao could no longer suppress the battle-lust in his bones and charged out.
Wen Lan’s expression turned cold. "Wen Dabao!"
Wen Dabao shouted back, "Don’t worry, I won’t get hurt!"
The words had barely left his mouth when he was sent flying by a cannonball, only to be caught in Bai Xiao Zhu’s web and bounced back.
From a high vantage point, Bai Xiao Zhu manipulated her silk threads while looking at her with concern. "Are you okay?"
Wen Dabao landed with an excited roll. "Never better!"
