Chapter 267 Breakfast by the Creek
Carson nodded, doing exactly as Layla asked.
Soon, tender fish meat was roasting over the fire.
The fish was rich in fat, and within moments of hitting the flames, the oil began to pop and sizzle.
A mix of fresh fish scent and a milky aroma filled the air.
Layla inhaled deeply, mouth watering.
Since they didn’t have any seasoning, she could only pray the meat was flavorful enough on its own.
Judging by the smell, though, it might turn out to be surprisingly delicious.
Once the outer layer was cooked, Layla couldn’t wait to tear off a piece.
Watching her juggle the hot meat between her hands before taking a huge bite-eyes bright, cheeks puffed out-Carson felt a strange warmth spread through his chest.
It was a sweet sensation, like eating sugar.
Layla held the cooled piece of fish to Carson’s lips. Chewing on the fragrant meat, she urged him, “This is actually really good. Try it. If we make it back, we have to figure out how to take some of this fish with us.”
Staring at the meat Layla offered, Carson felt a bit shy.
He was always the one taking care of others, feeding them.
This was the first time anyone had ever fed him.
He reached out to take it, but for some reason, his brain short-circuited.
Instead, he leaned forward and bit directly into the fish in her hand.
In the process, he accidentally sucked her fingertip into his mouth.
A warm, wet sensation spread over her hand.
Layla froze.
Their eyes met, and the air between them suddenly grew heavy.
She coughed lightly, looking down. They finished the rest of the fish in silence.
By the time their bellies were round and full, they had barely made a dent in the giant fish.
Layla patted her stomach. “Let’s save the rest for later.”
Carson stood up, nodding in agreement. “I’ll take it back to the cave. The smell might attract other predators if we leave it out here.”
Layla hadn’t thought of that.
It really paid to have someone with experience around.
Back during the apocalypse survival, zombies hadn’t cared for cooked meat, so she had nearly forgotten that rule of the wild.
But obviously, King Kong only understood Layla.
He didn’t react to Shane’s question, though his agitation grew visibly.
Watching this, Liam frowned. “You don’t think he senses danger approaching, do you?”
Everyone held their breath, instantly on high alert.
Jason scratched his head. “So, are we going down or not?”
“Is that a serious question?” George glared at him. “If we don’t go down and there’s real danger, Layla’s screwed, isn’t she?”
Jason rubbed the tip of his nose guiltily. “Well, Mr. Fields is with her, right?”
Hearing this, everyone turned to look at him.
Oliver gave a chilling, fake smile. “Before we came to Planet M715, didn’t you swear there were no dangerous life forms here? How do you explain that?”
Jason clamped his mouth shut.
If they really started assigning blame, he was in deep trouble, considering the Grant family had been the ones to provide this planet.
No one was interested in blame games right now, though. Every thought was consumed by Layla’s safety.
Standing off to the side, Stella watched them, a ruthless glint flashing through her eyes.
Layla had better be dead meat at the bottom of that cliff. If she dies, my life can finally get back on track.
