The time for reunion always ended so quickly. Early the next morning, Qi Taiguo had to cancel his leave and return to the unit, so he first took Cheng Su and the others to the station.
Even though his eyes were full of reluctance, there was none of the sobbing he’d imagined. Qi Taiguo couldn’t help feeling a little bitter and said, "We’re about to part, how come you’re not crying at all? At least pretend you can’t bear to let me go, I already thought about how I was going to comfort you!"
With that aggrieved tone, he completely ruined his tough soldier image.
Cheng Su couldn’t help laughing and crying at the same time. "It’s not like we’ll never see each other again. Hurry up, don’t break the unit’s rules. Call home when you have time."
Qi Taiguo gave a grunt of acknowledgment, couldn’t resist kissing her on the cheek, then rubbed his son’s head and said, "You listen to your mom, don’t bully her, you’ve got to give my woman some face, or next time I’ll tan your hide till it blooms."
Qi Xiaoqi rolled his eyes inwardly, turned his head away and ignored him.
"My bus is about to leave, you should go!" Cheng Su urged him, then quickly followed her son onto the bus.
Qi Taiguo could only wave a hand. "Be careful on the way."
The bus doors closed and it pulled out. Cheng Su waved, and when she saw he was still standing there, her nose suddenly stung, her eyes reddened, and she sniffed.
So that promise not to cry was actually fake, Qi Xiaoqi said to himself silently.
"Who knows when we’ll get to see your dad again." Cheng Su wiped at the corner of her eye as she spoke.
Qi Xiaoqi played with her fingers and said nothing.
Cheng Su didn’t expect him to answer anyway, she could only sigh softly, hoping the next time they met wouldn’t be too far off.
Qi Taiguo watched the two most important people in his life leave, then picked up his bag and went back to the unit to cancel his leave. Even though it had just been a brief reunion, to him it was extremely precious, and also a huge comfort and encouragement.
It was precisely because he wanted the family to be reunited as soon as possible that he had to work even harder.
Seeing the police arrive, Qi Taiguo stopped watching. He pressed his lips together and went back to the unit.
"You’re back just in time. There’s a mission; you’ll lead the team," Regimental Commander Chen said to him.
"Yes, sir," Qi Taiguo said. "What’s the mission...?"
"Those human-smuggling rings are rampant now. They don’t treat lives as lives. Out of every five people trying to sneak across, one dies..." Regimental Commander Chen said slowly.
Qi Taiguo froze for a moment. "I saw a fisherman haul up a corpse in his net when I landed on the island just now. I’m guessing it was one of them."
"Mm. You’ve been here half a year now; this kind of thing happens one after another. If not every day, then at least two or three cases a month. Now it’s getting even more frequent. These criminals only recognize money, not people. If we don’t crack down, it won’t stop." Regimental Commander Chen said, "Go get ready."
"Yes, sir."
