Third pov
During the past year, they had never missed a single visit. No matter how busy their schedules became, they always made time to come here. At some point, it had become a tradition. A habit neither of them questioned anymore.
Perhaps it was a promise made to someone they had forgotten, perhaps it was something else entirely.
They didn't know.
Here rests the beloved Beta of Fangspire Pack, Beta Jayden, with his beloved mate, Evelyn.
The three towering men stopped before the graves. The same three men who couldn't remember why they kept coming here, yet continued to do so regardless. Silas stepped forward and carefully placed the lilies between the two graves before stepping back. Then, almost instinctively, all three lowered their heads in respect before standing straight once more.
For twelve months, after paying their respects at the Alpha Cemetery where their father rested, they always came here afterward. Every month.
Without fail.
They didn't remember being particularly close to Jayden but then...
"I hope you'll visit my parents every once in a while so they won't be lonely. Leave flowers on their graves for me."
The words were blurry, faded, like an echo drifting through a locked room. They couldn't remember who had spoken them yet somehow, every one of them understood.
Just like there was another voice.
A voice that appeared whenever they tried to kill. Whenever they tried to become the ruthless men they used to be.
"Don't kill without reason."
"Be kind."
Kind.
For some reason, they listened.
Even Claude's wolf, the lunatic could no longer bring himself to kill. Sometimes he would find himself sitting alone on his throne, staring into the distance before quietly whispering, "Master," despite not knowing who he was calling for.
Silas's wolf was no better. He often sat silently before a chessboard, staring at the pieces for hours without moving them.
Lucien's wolf simply sighed again and again. For reasons neither of them understood yet the feeling remained.
Be kind.
"Erm..." Claude scratched his cheek before sitting down beside the graves with a sheepish smile. "How have you been, Beta Jayden? I hope you and your wife are happy up there."
He laughed awkwardly.
"We came again. Sorry for the intrusion. Me and my brothers are about to start ranting like usual, so listen carefully, okay?"
Silas sighed while Lucien remained standing with his hands in his pockets. The scene felt strangely natural, comfortable as though they had done this countless times before.
Claude smiled wider.
"Well, me and my brothers have built more orphanages around the packs. Not just for pack members either. Any child can come."
His expression softened.
"We wanted to focus on children who lost everything because of the rogues. Children who lost their parents and have nobody left to care for them."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"We also built shelters for men and women who had nowhere to go, gave them jobs, tightened security around the territories too."
His eyes flickered.
"There won't be another Samuel."
His voice became quieter.
"At least... I don't think there will be." A small smile touched his lips. "Especially with that strange curse that has suddenly appeared"
The air felt heavier as it always did.
Since they had started coming here, they had developed another strange tradition.
They talked about everything, their lives, their thoughts, their achievements, their failures. They weren't sure why but sometimes it felt as though they weren't speaking to the graves at all as though they were trying to speak to someone else.
Someone they had forgotten.
Claude's smile stiffened briefly before he forced it wider.
"Oh, and as for me..." He laughed. "I've started taking pottery classes." He looked away. "I'm happy."
The words sounded convincing.
Almost.
"Really happy."
Silas cleared his throat.
"Nothing much has happened on my side." His voice was calm as always. "I've started reading more romance novels during my free time."
Claude blinked, Lucien raised a brow but Silas ignored both of them.
"They are... interesting and I also acquired several new gold mines for the pack." Then, for the first time, a small smile appeared on his face.
A forced one but a smile nonetheless.
"I'm happy too."
Silence followed, then both brothers looked toward Lucien.
It was his turn.
The Alpha stood there quietly, staring at the graves. The wind stirred his dark hair, neither Claude nor Silas spoke.
They waited because this was always how it went. Eventually, Lucien would mention some accomplishment, dome new territory, some pack business and then he would say he was happy.
Just like they always did but this time...
"And I hope you'll be happy too."
The words surfaced in his mind without warning, he couldn't remember who had said them, but he knew he had to be happy.
For a moment, Lucien didn’t speak, he didn’t move. His gaze lingered on the gravestones before slowly lifting toward the sky above.
The silence stretched longer and longer, pressing down on them, until finally his voice drifted into the air—low, quiet, honest.
“I’m not happy.”
