The Heart of the Abyss was the Frost God's progenitor's relic, forged from his own blood essence and infused with the purest power of the laws of frost.
If they could get it, Aldric could rebuild his body.
And the Frost Deity Branch could rise again.
That was why Gwendolyn had come to the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm.
It was also the hope the Frost Deity Branch had carried for tens of thousands of years.
But they weren't the only ones who wanted the relic.
The demons were after it too.
And maybe not just the demons.
"We have to find the Heart of the Abyss before the demons do."
There was a resolve in Gwendolyn's voice Jared had never heard before.
"Yeah."
Jared nodded and looked deeper into the ice plains. "Senior Aldric said the Heart of the Abyss is somewhere in the depths of this ice plains. He doesn't know the exact location, but he said there's a hidden passage here, one the Frost Deity Branch built long ago. It leads into the inner precincts where the relic was kept."
He paused, eyes fixed ahead. "From what he remembers, the entrance should be beneath an ice peak."
"An ice peak?" Gwendolyn looked around.
The ice plains stretched to the horizon, empty and endless. There wasn't an ice peak anywhere in sight.
"Keep moving." Jared turned and headed farther into the ice plains. "Senior Aldric said the peak is in the central region of the ice plains. It's at least 100 miles from here."
100 miles.
On ordinary ground, that kind of distance meant nothing to Jared.
He could have crossed it in the time it took a stick of incense to burn.
But out here on the ice plains of the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm, every step felt like slogging through a swamp.
The slick surface underfoot, the biting frost energy, the curtain of icy mist—everything dragged their speed down.
100 miles would take at least 2 hours.
Jared quickened his pace.
Gwendolyn stayed right behind him.
Behind them, the aura of the Demonic Cultivators still trailed after them, but more slowly now.
The burden on those True Immortal cultivators was getting heavier by the minute, and several of their auras had already started to turn unstable.
Jared stopped paying attention to them.
He put everything he had into moving forward.
2 hours later, a massive ice peak rose into view ahead of them.
It towered hundreds of yards high, blue from base to summit.
Its peak vanished into the icy mist, too high to see.
The mountain's surface bristled with ice spires and ice pillars, as if countless swords had burst straight out of the frozen mass.
They flashed with a killing cold through the mist.
At the base of the ice peak yawned a huge chasm, about 3 yards wide and so deep its bottom disappeared into darkness.
The frost energy pouring out of it was several times denser than the cold on the ice plains, and the ice along the edges had darkened to an almost black blue—the kind of color only tens of thousands of years of deepfrost power could carve into it.
"This is it."
Jared stopped in front of the ice peak, his gaze locking onto the chasm. "The entrance to the hidden passage is below it."
Gwendolyn walked to the edge and looked down.
The chasm was bottomless to the eye.
All she could make out was a layer of icy blue radiance flickering far below, like something deep in the dark was glowing.
She felt it then.
The aura of the Frost Deity Branch's relic was coming from the depths of the chasm.
"I'm going down."
Gwendolyn moved to jump into the chasm.
Jared caught her with one hand. "Wait."
He pulled a rope from his satchel of holding.
It had been woven from golden silkworm thread—tough enough to withstand tens of thousands of pounds of force.
He tied one end to a thick ice pillar at the edge of the chasm and fastened the other around Gwendolyn's waist.
"I'll go first. You stay up here and wait. If anything feels wrong, pull the rope up immediately."
Gwendolyn parted her lips, clearly about to argue.
But one look at Jared's expression—firm, absolute, leaving no room for debate—and in the end, she only nodded.
Jared pulled his hand back.
The icy blue glow on the gate settled at once, as if he had never touched it.
He turned and looked up toward the exit high above.
Gwendolyn's figure stood at the mouth of the chasm, so far away she looked like nothing more than a tiny black dot.
"Gwendolyn!" Jared shouted.
His voice echoed through the chasm.
"What is it?" Gwendolyn called down from above.
"The ice gate won't open! Can you come down?"
A moment later, Gwendolyn gripped the rope and began lowering herself down slowly.
When she landed at the bottom and saw the ice gate in front of Jared, surprise flashed through her eyes.
"The Frost God's progenitor's seal."
She stepped up to the gate, pressed her hand against it, closed her eyes, and drove her Ice God Bloodline to its limit.
Icy blue light flowed from her palm and resonated with the ice-blue radiance on the gate.
The six-petaled snowflake sigils on the gate began to turn.
Each petal rotated slowly with a series of sharp clicks, like some ancient mechanism waking up after ages of silence.
Gwendolyn opened her eyes, a flicker of joy breaking across her face. "The Ice God Bloodline is the key to opening this gate."
Icy blue spiritual power kept pouring from her palm.
The sigils spun faster and faster, the six-petaled snowflake blazed brighter, and the entire ice gate began to shudder.
Boom—
The ice gate slowly swung inward.
An even denser wave of frost energy came surging out from beyond it, swallowing both Jared and Gwendolyn at once.
Jared's chaos-flame surged up in a violent burst, forcing the frost energy back.
Gwendolyn drew in a sharp breath and pulled the spilling frost energy straight into her body.
The color drained from her face at once, but her eyes flashed with wild delight.
To her, that frost energy was nourishment. It would feed her cultivation.
