“Stop!”
A commanding voice rang out from the entrance.
Everyone turned at once.
At the entrance to the passage, more than a dozen figures filed in one after another.
They wore white arcane robes embroidered with golden sun emblems. Golden saintlight flame burned over every one of them, flooding the icy blue passage with blazing gold.
At their head was a middle-aged man with refined features and three long strands of beard. He wore golden robes, a Crown of Radiance, and carried a golden sceptre.
At the top of it sat a sunstone the size of a fist, blazing with searing holy radiance.
His cultivation was Golden Immortal Level Four.
The dozen or so people behind him were all at least Golden Immortal Level One. Among them were two Golden Immortal Level Three cultivators and three at Golden Immortal Level Two.
Agents of the Hall of Radiance.
Jared’s heart sank.
Josephine alone had already been enough trouble.
Now the Hall of Radiance had arrived too.
And they hadn’t come weak. A Golden Immortal Level Four was leading them, and their lineup was far stronger than anything the Ember God Palace had sent.
The treasure hidden in the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm really had drawn more than one power here.
"And here I was wondering who it could be."
The middle-aged man's gaze settled on Josephine, the corner of his mouth curling with contempt. "So it's the holy maiden of the Inferno Devil bloodline. You brought a pack of nobodies and thought you could come into the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm and take the relic? Are all demons this arrogant about not knowing their place?"
Josephine's brows drew tight. A flash of killing intent cut through her dark-crimson eyes. "Since when did people from the Hall of Radiance learn to skulk behind others and pick up what they left behind?"
"Skulk behind others?"
The middle-aged man laughed, and there was no warmth in it. "The Northern Abyss Frost Chasm has always been under the Hall of Radiance's control. When did it become demon territory? I came here openly. You're the ones who trespassed into the Hall of Radiance's forbidden grounds. That alone is a death sentence."
As he spoke, his gaze swept over everyone in the passage.
It paused for the briefest moment on Jared and Gwendolyn, and fresh disdain flickered in his eyes.
"True Immortal Realm Level Eight and True Immortal Realm Level Nine? And you even brought along one of the remnants of the Frost Deity Branch?"
His smile turned even more scornful. "Looks like young people these days really don't know how the word death is written."
Jared said nothing.
But a cold gleam flashed through his violet eyes.
He memorized that face.
In the Eighteenth Firmament, a Golden Immortal Level Four truly counted as a top-tier powerhouse.
But to Jared, Golden Immortal Level Four wasn't unbeatable.
This just wasn't the time to make a move.
There were too many from the Hall of Radiance. More than ten of them were Golden Immortal or above. Add Josephine's demon force to the mix, and if all three sides crashed into each other, he and Gwendolyn would be trapped in the middle with terrible odds of getting out alive.
The best move was obvious—sit back and watch the tigers tear at each other.
Let the Hall of Radiance and the demons fight first. Then, when both sides were wounded and spent, make his move and seize the relic.
But would Josephine let that happen?
The middle-aged man clearly had no intention of wasting more words on Josephine.
He raised the golden sceptre in his hand.
The sunstone at its tip erupted with blinding holy radiance, flooding the entire passage with harsh, brilliant light.
"I'm giving you ten breaths."
His voice rang out cold and commanding. "Take your people and get out of the Northern Abyss Frost Chasm. When those ten breaths are up, anyone still standing here dies."
Josephine's face darkened.
The demon cultivators behind her instinctively stepped back, fear flashing through their eyes.
Her boots carved two deep trenches through the ice.
The flesh between her thumb and forefinger split open, and dark red blood dripped from her fingertips onto the frozen ground.
Each drop hit with a sharp hiss. The primal fire in her blood burned tiny smoking pits into the ice.
But she did not give an inch.
Her dark red eyes locked on the middle-aged man ahead.
The primal fire gathered in her palm again, burning even hotter than before. Within the dark red flames, faint crimson patterns began to move—proof that the Inferno Devil bloodline inside her had been pushed to its limit.
“Interesting.”
The middle-aged man's gaze dropped to the primal fire reforming in Josephine’s hand, and surprise flickered through his eyes.
“A peak Golden Immortal Level Three who can take one of my saintlight blasts head-on and stay standing? As expected of the holy maiden of the Inferno Devil bloodline. You do have some skill.”
He paused, the corner of his mouth curling into a cold smile.
“But only some.”
He raised the golden scepter again, and the sunstone at its tip burst with radiance even harsher than before.
This time, the holy radiance did not scatter into separate beams.
It compressed at the tip of the scepter into a fist-sized golden orb, its surface crawling with dense layers of glowing runes. Every single one pulsed with enough power to burn heaven and earth to nothing.
“Saintlight Judgement.”
The middle-aged man spoke the four words almost softly.
Then the golden orb shot from his hand, dragging a long tail of fire as it blasted toward Josephine.
Everything in its path ignited.
The air itself seemed to catch fire, and the ice crystals lining both sides of the passage vanished the instant they touched the orb—no melting, no dripping, just instant vapor, erased into white steam.
A trench several feet deep was gouged through the ice, and the edges of it were scorched into black, glassy crystal.
